How to test your logo before launching

Testing matters

Before committing to your logo, test it. Real-world feedback is better than theoretical debates.

What to test

Recognition: Can people recall it after brief exposure? Legibility: Does it read clearly at various sizes? Versatility: Does it work across applications? Distinctiveness: Does it stand out from competitors?

Who to test with

Test with:

  • Target customers (the only opinion that truly matters)
  • Industry-naive friends (for fresh perspective)
  • Design-aware colleagues (for technical feedback)
  • Don't ask everyone's opinion. Be selective.

    Testing methods

Quick recognition test: Show logo for 3 seconds, ask what they remember. Context test: Show logo in realistic applications — app icon, business card, website header. Comparison test: Show alongside competitors.

    What feedback to trust

    Trust feedback about:

  • Functional issues (can't read it, looks like competitor)
  • Emotional responses (feels cheap, feels cold)
  • Ignore feedback that:

  • Prescribes solutions ("make it blue")
  • Reflects pure preference ("I don't like sans-serifs")

Testing small sizes

Always test at actual small sizes. Logos that look great on presentations often fail as app icons.

Acting on results

Testing informs refinement, not wholesale change. Use insights to polish, not panic.
