Should you design your own logo?

Some founders design their own logos. Sometimes it works. Usually it doesn't.

When DIY can work

You have design skills. Real skills, not just Canva familiarity. You understand typography, proportion, and visual hierarchy. You're pre-revenue and bootstrapping. Every pound matters. A decent self-made logo is better than no logo. You're testing an idea. If you're validating a concept, perfect branding can wait.Your industry is casual. Some markets don't demand polished branding. Know your context.

When to hire a professional

You're raising investment. Investors judge every detail. Amateur branding raises questions. You're selling premium. If you charge premium prices, you need premium presentation. You've tried and failed. If your attempts aren't working, that's a sign.Design isn't your strength. Founders are good at many things. Graphic design often isn't one of them.

The honest assessment

Can you identify what makes a logo good or bad? Not just "I like it" but understanding why something works technically?

If not, you'll struggle to design something effective—and you might not realise it's not working.

The middle path

Start simple. A clean wordmark in a quality font is better than an amateur symbol.Use good tools. If you must DIY, use Figma (free), not Canva templates.Get feedback. Show people in your target market, not your mum.Plan to upgrade. DIY branding should be temporary. Budget for professional work once you have revenue.

The real cost

Your time has value. Hours spent struggling with design could go to building your product or serving customers.

Professional design is often cheaper than your opportunity cost.
